That’s a wrap: Afrocats’ impact in 2024

afrocats

The Afrocats team have been super busy helping Manchester’s global majority sanctuary seekers across the city feel safe, welcome, and confident to reach for their dreams - let’s recap what we’ve been up to over 2024.

We kickstarted the year by helping marginalised communities in North Manchester were able to raise the roof with cultural dance while keeping their blood pressure in check, and made sure our women were able to reclaim the outdoors with our walking project, which of course included more dancing!

And in the spring with support from Cancer Research UK, we raised awareness around ‘The Big C’ among our Iranian participants, changing minds and breaking taboos about cancer using innovative roleplays and judgement-free spaces to discuss illness.

We also held another hugely successful collaboration with our partner The Whitworth over the school holidays, and stepped into summer in Salford – fostering community cohesion through arts, crafts, and general good vibes all round throughout Manchester city centre and beyond.

We worked with our partner Altrincham Grammar School for Girls on some fantastic fundraising initiatives, while empowering isolated women by boosting access to digital literacy on drop-ins and free walking tours so that they can upskill and make new friends.

And don’t even mention the varied and delicious food that our Afrokittens have made with their own fair hands alongside partner Cook Stars on our Youth of the World programme: Singaporean fried rice, burgers and wedges, and even homemade soup with rolls – our young people always leave us hungry for more!

Special mentions go to:

We can’t wait to see where 2025 takes us, and as always, we look forward to seeing many bright and smiling young - and grown-up! - faces on our sessions.

Happy new year from all at Afrocats!

Keep up to date with what we get up to in 2025 here on our website and on our socials, and see the difference that our work makes for marginalised communities across the city - see you in 2025!
