Meeting new people and boosting self-confidence - Jeannie’s Afrocats work placement

School pupil Jeannie recently undertook a work placement with Afrocats – read more about how she got on in our Q&A with her.

Hi Jeannie! Why did you choose Afrocats for your work experience placement?

I chose my work experience to be with Afrocats is that they empower marginalised people in Manchester, and support people to volunteer on their projects as well.

Being on session was a great way for me to share my creative ideas and opinions with the team and the people that they help, and have fun and make memories at the same time.

How has the overall experience been for you?

I’ve learned so much over the past two days - I got really stuck in with my creativity, and bringing new ideas to the sessions.

It also opened my eyes as to how many different kinds of roles there are on the Afrocats team and finding out what they all do - and just how much hard work they put into running an organisation that helps people all over Manchester.

What did you get up to on the placement?

We explored ideas about what you need to be a project producer and marketer, and what kind of experience and personality traits you need to do these jobs from an Afrocats perspective (see below image).

The sessions also howed me that I can talk to new people, cook and make new foods, dance, and take part in plays and performances – which have all now become my new favourite hobbies.

I even came up with ideas for Afrocats’ TikTok and how to promote the organisation to young people who might not know about them, plus I got to create some design ideas for Saturday project flyers – that was really fun!

What would you like to do in the future?

I would love to work as cabin crew and travel to places I've never been before, and my experience has shown me that there is no stopping me when it comes to my future career - the skills I picked up over the last couple of days have shown me it’s just about the work you put into it.

The sessions have provided me with a huge sense of encouragement - I'm excited for what’s to come next!

Fantastic stuff! And lastly, what was the best thing about your placement?

It helped me so much with getting to know other people and was also a way to empower myself, boosting my self-confidence to try new things, and not feel too worried about it.

Thank you for your time Jeannie – we wish you all the best and can’t wait to see what the future brings for you!
