Afrocats enjoy special HOME screening of 'The Smeds and the Smoos'

Earlier this summer, I had the pleasure of organising a special screening for the women of Afrocats and their families at Manchester’s independent cinema and art gallery HOME.

The featured film, The Smeds and the Smoos, directed by Daniel Snaddon and Samantha Cutler and with performances by Sally Hawkins, Bill Bailey, and Ashna Rabheru, was a huge hit with the attendees.

Set on a faraway planet where two distinct families - the red Smeds and the blue Smoos - live in isolation from one another, the movie tells a heartwarming whimsical tale of forbidden friendship, and love.

'This was more than just a movie event, it was an opportunity for Afrocats participants to enjoy a day out with their children'

The story follows Janet, a young Smed, and Bill, a young Smoo, who defy their families' longstanding animosity to become friends, and whose bond blossoms into a deeper love, challenging their families' prejudices and forging a path for reconciliation.

The film's charming animation and engaging storyline captivated the audience as Janet and Bill navigate their secret meetings and defy the expectations of their families, and viewers are treated to a beautiful message about understanding, acceptance, and the transformative power of love.

The screening was more than just a movie event, it was an opportunity for Afrocats participants to enjoy a day out with their children, and come together to enjoy a shared experience in a welcoming environment.

The children enjoyed the colorful world of the Smeds and the Smoos, and it was heartening to see families laughing, discussing, and enjoying the film together.

In addition to the film, the day was filled with a sense of community and laughter, highlighting the success of the event, and the positive impact it had on the film’s viewers.

Overall, The Smeds and the Smoos proved to be an excellent choice for this special screening, combining delightful storytelling with meaningful lessons, and I’m grateful to have had the opportunity to share this experience with Afrocats participants.

I look forward to more events that bring people together through the realm of cinema with Afrocats.
